up to come

From films to fashion, music to must-read books, view our essential guide to the things that will be rocking our world in the next 12 months.

The year of the FitFlop

Posh Corso Como boutique in Milan is stocking FitFlop in January. Apparently, the Italian 'Vogue' editors are in raptures. Unlikely? Not really; flat shoes are on the map for spring - we refer you to Christopher Kane, where models (left) walked in comfy, zero-elevation sandals. Very cute, very sensible, very, well, FitFlop. Don't get one. We think it's ugly... maybe another material or something, but definitely nothing close tho these.

 Diamond Queen

Next year is the Queen's Diamond Jubilee. Pay homage with Sally Bedell Smith's new biography, 'Elizabeth the Queen: The Life of a Modern Monarch' (Michael Joseph), out on February 2. Watch out, too, for the V&A's exhibition of nearly 100 Cecil Beaton photographs of Her Majesty, from February. We're looking foward to see it!

 Watch this face: Lara Mullen

The British schoolgirl spotted by Premier Models this summer was tearing up the catwalk at Prada and Alexander Wang a matter of weeks later. Expect big things.
From left: Mullen walks the Jonathan Saunders, Prada and Alexander Wang spring/summer 2012 shows.

 One to watch: Elizabeth Olsen

Word is, Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen's little sister Elizabeth is about to steal the limelight from them. See her star-making turn as a damaged woman fleeing a cult in 'Martha Macy May Marlene', out in February.

 Landmark anniversaries

Nicole Farhi celebrates 30 years in fashion; Matthew Williamson, 15; and Alber Elbaz is toasting a tenure of 10 years at Lanvin. Let's raise a glass.

 Marni at H&M

Hot on the heels of Versace for H&M comes another tie-up between a fashion house and the retailer. In March, H&M meets Marni, label of choice for esoteric fashion lovers. Start queuing now...

 Fashion icon: Miss Piggy

Prepare for Muppet mania as Miss Piggy and co return to the big screen in 'The Muppets' in February. Piggy is now the plus-size fashion editor at French 'Vogue'. C'est vrai…

 Celluloid chic

We can't believe it's not out yet but Madonna's long-awaited ' W.E. ', telling the scandalous love story of Edward VIII and Wallis Simpson, is in cinemas from 20 January. Enjoy the exquisite recreations of Simpson's couture by the costume designer Arianne Phillips. The Material girl will release a new album and world tour in the spring time.
Other must-sees include: Helena Bonham Carter stars as Miss Havisham in the film ' Great Expectations '; Keira Knightley reunites with the director Joe Wright as the lead in ' Anna Karenina '; and another literary heroine, Daisy Buchanan (played by Carey Mulligan, left), is getting the big screen treatment in Baz Luhrmann's ' The Great Gatsb y'; Meryl Streep as Margaret Thatcher in Phyllida Lloyd's ' The Iron Lady '; and Scarlett Johansson as a flesh-eating alien in Jonathan Glazer's ' Under the Skin '.

The Twenties: roaring back into fashion

Maybe it's the influence of 'The Great Gatsby', but the Twenties is foxtroting its way back into fashion for spring. Check out the flapper dresses at Gucci (left), Etro and Philosophy di Alberta Ferretti spring/summer 2012.

Designers in the spotlight

In March, the Design Museum in London puts 20 years' worth of Christian Louboutin creations on show, while Les Arts Décoratifs in Paris brings us 'Louis Vuitton Marc Jacobs', a tribute to the founder of the luxury brand and its current creative director. In May, the V&A charts the history of debutante dressing in 'Ballgowns: British Glamour since 1950' and the Costume Institute in New York presents 'Elsa Schiaparelli and Miuccia Prada'.

 Labels to love

Teatum Jones: This quietly subversive duo's spring collection was inspired by domestic frustration in the Fifties, but boy do they make a nice dress. Find it at Liberty.
Kenzo: The pair behind the cult label Opening Ceremony have given the house a sporty face-lift. Radical!
No 21: Alessandro Dell'Acqua's next collection - a fusion of glossy sexiness and boyish cuts - looks his best yet. Available from Matches.

Crazy prints or ice-cream colours?

These are two key looks for spring/summer, as seen at Dolce & Gabbana (far left) and Louis Vuitton (left). Which one will you be wearing?

Karl's collection

Not one to rest on his laurels, Karl Lagerfeld, creative director of Chanel and Fendi, has signed up to design a new range called 'Karl'. Set to launch in January, the rock'n'roll-inspired collection has affordability as a USP; items such as biker jackets, sweatshirts, shirts and dresses will retail between £50 and £390. "We are working on a lot of amazing ideas which are all about making luxury affordable and accessible," said Lagerfeld. Hear, hear.
Net-a-porter.com will stock around 70 pieces from the collection exclusively from January 25. In anticipation, the luxury etailer has launched a microsite for all-things Karl (see left), including a hilarious 'Karlify' app, which allows you to super-impose the designer's trademark ponytail and sunglasses over your face; net-a-porter.com/karl.

Stella's space

2012 will be a big year for Stella McCartney, who is dressing Team GB for the Olympics. As such, the designer, who won the Red-Carpet accolade at the British Fashion Awards in November, is the subject of celebration at Selfridges, which is hosting The World of Stella between January 26 - February 14. Activities in store include a pop-up shop for McCartney's adidas collaboration, MYWORLD 2012 (see left); the exclusive launch of three new lingerie styles; and McCartney will make an appearance to unveil her new fragrance.

Little Liberty

The much-loved department store launches a children's department in 2012. Expect all the best-dressed kids to be wearing it.

I really enjoyed reading your things to watch out for. Elizabeth Olsen is just creeping into the spotlight, she is beautiful and looks very much like her sisters! The fitflops remind me of some jelly shoes I wore when I was younger, haha! Following on bloglovin' :) xo
